Thailand - World Leading Ball Dispenser's
Worth a Wander
Koh Pha Ngan - (Koh-Pen-Ne-Yang)
We all know why we are here, the way of the bucket is strong with you. The island is well-known for it's monthly full moon party, and it seems the whole island parties. You see the beach of thousands gradually get the same level as drunk as you. A word of advice, do not get emotionally attached to your flip flops, as it's tradition taking off your footwear to go into any beach bar, people may get confused as to which ones are theirs on the way out. I mean you can hide them as much as possible, but chances are, your drunk as well, and now you can't find them. Mushroom mountain is another hot spot at the full mooner, you know whose been there as you walk along the beach, the giveaway is grazed knees, they tried to fly down.

Koh Phi Phi - (Koh-Pee-Pee)
Heaven on earth, beautiful beaches with shallow waters, bars on every corner, dramatic scenery, Thai boxing, I'm frothing at the mouth. It's too much. You know how they say the Thai's are loveliest of people? Well, they made an island for me it seems. There's more? 'The Beach' is here? Maya beach can be visited by boat, and as you enter you'll think 'Wow, I didn't realise how many boats could fit in a small cove? And didn't he jump of a cliff to get here? Ohh, yeah, movie magic. Nevertheless, it's a beautiful part of the world. Now, as night falls and you peruse the bars, you may hear an enthusiastic crowd in the centre. What are they watching? I bet it's Muay Thai. Yes. But with a twist. You can go into the ring for a round and get a free bucket. You opponent is whoever else wants to go in there. Fingers crossed it's a child for an easy win. After enjoying what is probably your thousandth Changover, you can explore the many island beaches surrounding this wonder of a place. A refreshing cliff jump is a great way to feel more alive, followed by visits to monkey island. Now, don't get to excited in swim spots because our boat did decided to leave, with me still holding onto the ladder. Thai people are famed for being the nicest around, but even they have their limits, I hope he doesn't meet me in the ring later.

Koh Samui - (Koh-Sam-Ew-Ee)
The gateway drug island to the full moon party, Samui is small enough to drive around in a couple of hours. Who wants to rent a car with me? It's cheap, a chance to explore the island's waterfalls and beaches, and if you have a slight accident, the repairs are cheap. I heard from a friend. Whilst the beaches here are not at the same level as other islands, there is a great opportunity to learn how to dive at a low price. Of course you can learn in other places, but the lure of beach bars, Muay Thai and island shenanigans are strong. You can find pockets of beach huts here, which are a great place to set up camp before you head over to the party of the moony. Is that what they call it? Boat transfers are included in your ticket. As there is healthy competition for places to stay here you can pick up a lovely beach hut, getting friendly with the local owners comes with it's advantages. They tell you the best price for tickets and can even take you to a local buffalo fight. There nothing more surreal than hundreds of Thai's watching a fight, whilst shouting around a bamboo ring. What was that? The eye of the buffalo I bet on? There's 200 baht I won't see again.

Railey Beach
You know an island is after my heart when you have to walk along the beach, climb up a rope to get to the other side. That's where the jungle huts and cheaper accommodation is. The great thing is seeing people arrive with wheeled suitcases and realising they have a climb to get to the other side. It's worth the boat ride over just for that. It's only fair as Railey Beach is a climbing destination and the hippie center in Thailand. You can smell them from the mainland. I kid. This climbing mecca provides hours of entertainment, be it you giving climbing a go, or relaxing by one of the bars and drinking every time someone falls off. At night the softly lit beach bars play reggae tunes, as you listen the the waves quietly roll in. This place is amazingly relaxed, it scores 9 Bob Marley's out of 10 hammocks on the chilled spectrum.

Chiang Mai (Chang-My)

Who wants waterfalls? Of course we all do, it's humid and hot here. The highland's of Thailand covers a huge amount of the country, about 500 square kilometres ,that's the size of Wales.... I lied, I don't know. But it's big. For your waterfall fix you have Mae Ya and Wachirathan which you can do in one day. It's perfect to get the mosquito's off for a few minutes. Whilst your visiting the roof of Thailand, you can check out the village of Mae Chem. It's terraced rice fields are a thing of beauty and will make you wonder what your having for dinner. We all know rice will be in there.

Can I Come In Please?
Finally.. It's time for injections. You know a place is tropical when you need to be immunised from something. Diphtheria, Hepatitis A, Poliomyelitis, Tetanus ,Rabies, and Typhoid. It's an impressive list, but you'll get these immunisations are for the majority of South East Asia. Just go into your local GP and ask for the Asia Bumper Pack, they'll know. . You get your visa on entry and this is for 30 days. As with all places in South East Asia, if you want to stay longer you'd have to do a border run, Malaysia is the perfect place to do this if you are in the south, there are many taxi services and locals that will help you do this. Just ask nicely, and haggle, a bit... Northern Thai adventurers can throw in a cheeky trip to Lao. The choices for extending your stay are endless! Oh oh and Cambodia, or Myanmar...hmm, maybe Myanmar..

Us here at Cheeky Finance recommend a 'Going Rogue' pot of money. This is set aside from the daily budget for the unknown eg. A night that has gone from zero to ten, or a sudden urge to get lost on a tropical island.

A word of warning, the budget killer that is south east Asian haggling has entered the scene. Here's some friendly advice. You pay, they smile, you've paid way too much. They look sad, you've paid too much. You've given any money, anywhere, you've paid over the odds. Check with your hotel/hostel/friends beforehand on what is 'reasonable' on anything from tours to clothes to taxis. You'll not get mates rates, you're a tourist. Just decide what's the right price for you, and if it's not walk away, I'd recommend a strong confident walk, if I had to choose. More often than not, you'll get shouted at the last price. Take it or leave it. In some places I've been haggling for days, built up a relationship with the person and given them alternatives to money to pay for things. I mean, who can resist my top ten willy jokes?
What's The Weather Like?
Know which side to explore islands!!!

Koh Samui, Pheng Ngang and Tao have different rainy seasons to Koh Phi Phi and Phuket. December to March is the preferable time to explore the Phuket, Krabi and Phi Phi. Whilst late January to April is the better time for Full Moon Parties in Kon Pheng Ngang and chilling on the Samui. Yeah, but I went in blah blah blah and the weather was great. Well, that's tremendous, I'm happy for you, and you saw a whale shark? Wow. It's just a friendly reminder that the two coasts have different weather patterns.... are they gone? Phew, it's a relief they didn't show me those Whale Shark pictures, shut up, I'm not jealous.

Will I Get Into Trouble?

We are all in Thailand with the curiosity of the famed ping pong shows, you want to tell you friends of the marvels of this specifically Thai entertainment. If you are interested in the life of the pong, I would strongly recommend tipping after ever performance. I know we are all bemused by it, where did the goldfish go? Are they real razors? And can she really shot a dart with her vajayjay? If like me, you do not tip after every trick, word will get round to the performer. My life flash before me, when during the bit where she pops a balloon from the other side of the stage she turned to me and yelled. 'You pay now!', now this isn't the first or last time I have been threatened with a vagina, but imagine explaining that with a call back home? Oh this dart scar? It's a long story. Needles to say, I ran out of the club looking carefully down the barrel to see if her aim was off, I mean I know she's fully loaded. Luckily for me the shot wasn't taken, I bet it's lost down there with the goldfish that got stage fright. Needless to say, I haven't been back to a show since. Moral of the story, tip generously. Oh and the drinks are a rip off in there, I've just now realised where all my money went.
Optional Extras
Kaosan Road (Cow-San)

It's a road, that sells beer and cheap food. A backpacker mecca, it's was old, grubby, cheap, full of vendors and a base of travel for coaches to other parts of Thailand. A melting pot of backpackers, holiday makers and gap year travellers. You want fake anything, it's there... well it's was. Now it's being redeveloped as an 'International Walking Street'. It needed a face lift I suppose.

Phuket (Fuck-It)
Phuket island is the tourist hot spot of the west that has multiple personalities. You have the chilled more expensive beaches kata and karon. But you also have Patong, if you fancy a ping pong show or losing money at the various bar games this is the place for you.

Koh Tao - (Koh-Towel)
Forever seen as the ideal getaway from the shouty Islands below. Koh Tao is known as the place to chill with the turtles and SCUBA to your hearts content. It's still got the rustic charm and is the least developed out of Koh Samui and Koh Pen Nang. But there will be a pre/post full moon party here, pick your sleepy time location wisely.
