Worth a Wander

Halong Bay

Ha Long Bay famous for it's thousands of rocky outcrops is the one of the image images that come to mind when thinking about the country.  The idyllic idea of floating down the water exploring the 1,600 limestone islands and islets in peace and tranquillity sounds amazing.  These is a small issue in the fact that other people know about this place, even UNESCO World Heritage Site got involved in 1994.  So, that does mean you'll be sharing this experience, with, I think the technical term is a fuck tonne of visitors.  If you are a boat enthusiast this is the perfect adventure, as the boat to open water ratio is weighted heavily towards the former. Look, it's a lovely place, and the fact that you can go full blown kayak adventurer discovering all types of caves such as phreatic caves, karstic foot caves and marine notch caves. Or as I like to call them, big and small caves.

Hoi An

In the 90's UNESCO must have loved Vietnam, this beautiful ancient Town offers a mega mix of design. Chinese temples, a Japanese-designed bridge, French-colonial houses, it'd even thrown in an old canal. To aid the tourists, the old shops have been turned into a bucket load of tailors, souvenir shops, and art galleries. The biggest attraction being infamous tailors with their high quality work at ridiculously low prices.  You can become your own fashion mogul, decide on the fabric and design of your newest invention.  It will be ready in no time, so you can debut your fluorescent dragon kimono to everyone's delight.  Bear in mind there is a tourist tax of VND 120,000, each ticket is valid for 10 days. That's enough time for the release of your new clothing range.

Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum

Ho Chi Minh was arguably the most popular political figure in Vietnam, and was affectionately known as ‘Uncle Ho’, I kid you not.  Uncle Ho politely asked that his body would not be preserved after his death. So.. His body is preserved here in a glass case at the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum in central Hanoi. Modelled on Lenin's mausoleum and with free entrance, learn about Vietnam's favourite uncle.  Whilst you have probably invested and created the most cutting edge and racy clothes during your adventures of Vietnams, visitors are asked to dress appropriately out of respect for Vietnam's departed leader.  The mankini will have to be used on another day.

The Cu Chi Tunnels

Bring out your inner Viet Cong and discover about what sub terraranan life during the wartimes was like. There are 120km of tunnels, and they were surprisingly started against the French around 1948.  Once they started, they kept them going through resulting wars with the USA, it seems the work never stopped. It was basically like adding extensions to your underground home during every war. They must have had chats on each extension, 'I think this part would be a lovely place for a more open plan kitchen'. Situated near Ho Chi Minh’s  you too can feel what it's like to scurry through these tunnels.  Like the clothes in South East Asia, these tunnels were built for Vietnam sized people, it's going to be a tight fit.  The fun doesn't end there, why not try your hand at firing weapons on the gun range, the weapons here were the ones used in fighting so feel free to use an M16 or AK47 assault rifle. It's a deafening experience, if I was at war I'd wear ear muffs the whole time.

The War Remnants Museum

Otherwise known as the ‘Museum of American War Crimes’ the war remnants museum bring the reality of the brutal war into graphic detail.  If your imagination cannot comprehend what a long and brutal war looks like, the graphic photographs and menacing American military equipment on display will. Situated in District 3 in Ho Chi Minh City the museum is open all year round.

Us here at Cheeky Finance recommend a 'Going Rogue' pot of money. This is set aside from the daily budget for the unknown eg. A night that has gone from zero to ten, or a sudden urge to get fire an AK47.

BeFunky-Thai Haggle 1.jpg

A word of warning, the budget killer that is south east Asian haggling has entered the scene.  Here's some friendly advice. You pay, they smile, you've paid way too much.  They look sad, you've paid too much.  You've given any money, anywhere, you've paid over the odds.  Check with your hotel/hostel/friends beforehand on what is 'reasonable' on anything from tours to clothes to taxis.  You'll not get mates rates, you're a tourist. Just decide what's the right price for you, and if it's not walk away, I'd recommend a strong confident walk, if I had to choose.  More often than not, you'll get shouted at the last price. Take it or leave it.  In some places I've been haggling for days, built up a relationship with the person and given them alternatives to money to pay for things.  I mean, who can resist my top ten willy jokes?

North South Divide

The temperature in the South of Vietnam remains constant throughout the year, whereas the north's climate fluctuates much more. Northern Vietnam has four seasons compared to the tropical two (dry, wet) season in the south.  This means the north can be quite cool in the winter there, but very warm in summer.  Think of it as your wardrobe needs to expand from t-shirt and shorts for northern Vietnam. And as with everywhere in South East Asia, be prepared for humidity and playing in the rain.

Will I Get Into Trouble?

Will I Get Into Trouble?

Pickpocketing is quite prevalent in Vietnam, the way of the artful dodger is strong here.  Surprisingly as you are a tourist, you will be of interest. I mean look at you, I can smell the money and latest technology from here.  There are many ways to get that sweet sweet dong from you, the first way is to work they work in a gang  In cities such as Ho Chi Minh, we had a group who casually ran over someone's foot on a moped. There was one onlooker, one providing the distraction of running over someone's foot, the person on the back of the moped tried to grab the item.  we were told later that there would probably be the final gang member hiding your phone/wallet/camera/Pokémon cards under a jacket or newspaper. It sounds like a dream team of pocket picking. Whilst there are always the standard child pickpockets. In Vietnam a friend on the way home was propositioned by a female, who was touching him up.  All fair play? Well, no she had used a razer to cut the cord attaching his camera to his jeans. I suppose the main theme is.. good luck.

Mui Ne

Ahh the beach, you've got to love a tropical one.  Well, Mui Ne has Sand Dunes, whilst some may be looking at wonder at the geography of this area, others will be asking the question.  Can I slide down it? Well. Yes.  Enjoy! And go on, try and stand up on the sleds whilst falling down these Sahara-esque red and white sand dunes.  What's travel insurance for? Maybe we should have haggled for these though, I mean $50 for a sled seems steep.  It's almost as if you could have bought one.
